Reflecting On Reflective Practice
Dr Red Ruby Scarlet & Stephen Gallen

Reflecting On Reflective Practice is a new three part series exploring reflective practice in early childhood education and care services. Reflective practice is a fundamental requirement across all areas of the National Quality Standard and this series is a supportive, practical and engaging guide to embedding reflective practices across your service or organisation. The three parts have been carefully designed to reach the diversity of the profession. The three sessions explore the uses and purpose of:

  • Reflection
  • Reflective practice
  • Evaluation
  • Critical reflection
  • The practical nature of theory
  • Documentation

Using stories from their long-term experiences and current practices in education and care services, Dr Red Ruby Scarlet and Stephen Gallen provide examples of how they have worked at each level to learn, share and document their reflective practice processes in everyday curriculum.

The course is a self-paced on demand online course that you can log into any time for the duration of 3 months.

Part One: The Experience of Reflective Practice is an introduction to reflective practices. It explores what it is, why it is required, how to do it, when and where we can do reflective practices. Using practical examples, this introductory session is a friendly way in for new professionals or a refresher for more experienced professionals.
Part Two: Collective Reflective Practice explores how to engage in reflective practices in your educative teams with a focus on engaging in diverse perspectives to enrich how we understand children’s learning and our own professional learning. This intermediate session is for room leaders, educational leaders, directors and coordinators to plan for a cohesive pedagogical and operational collective approach to reflective practices.
Part Three: Playing With Reflective Practice dives into playing with worldviews, theories and philosophies and how they shape reflective practices. It offers descriptions and demonstrations of how to use a diverse range of theories to help you become familiar with ideas and to understand the practical nature of theory.
